THE BUILDING BLOCKS

  • Person in rugby gear holding a rugby ball, standing outdoors on a grassy field with trees and a building in the background, participating in a rugby training session.

    FUNDAMENTALS 101

Fundamentals are the base of our game. The best players in the game never get bored with the fundamentals. Players will be taught things such as but not limited to:

    How to grip a football

    Pass technique (short and long)

Play the balls (posture, position and grip)

    Defensive spacings

    Stepping into contact

  • Person lifting a barbell with weights on a gym floor.

    BULLET PROOFING (STRENGTH)

Our strength programs will vary depending on the physical and training age of our athletes, however, what will not change is our approach to strength training. BULLET PROOFING is our prehab process using correct movement patterns to gain mobility and flexibility. I am very strong in my belief that full Range Of Motion (ROM) supersedes the ability to lift heavy. Injury prevention is paramount for strength and conditioning coaches which is why every strength session begins with mobility.

A strong athlete is useless if he or she is on the side line.

  • Group of young men running or sprinting outdoors on a grassy field during daytime, wearing matching black and pink athletic uniforms and caps.

SPEED, AGILITY & CHANGE OF DIRECTION

Often used interchangeably but vastly different in our coaching approach. I break down the mechanics of sprinting and build each component. Also using closed drills we focus on posture, position and an understanding of power transfer in our change of direction before advancing to reacting to a stimulus (agility).

  • Young man in a black and pink sports uniform bending on grass during a daytime outdoor sporting event.

    TACKLE TECH & WRESTLE

Teaching correct tackle technique is paramount for safety. Starting with the approach to a tackle (our feet) into posture, position and contact. Once we have a fundamental understanding of a 1 v 1 tackle then we can progress to wrestle techniques to bring players to the ground. Wrestle is sometimes a dirty word in rugby league however it is a necessary part of our game. Ruck control is one of the most important parts of our game, and we will teach various techniques that will help to win the ruck or salvage lost tackles.

  • Salad with cherry tomatoes, sliced avocado, sliced watermelon radish, yellow bell pepper, shredded purple cabbage, chickpeas, chopped orange sweet potatoes, leaf lettuce, and microgreens on a round ceramic plate on a wooden surface.

    NUTRITION

This is the hardest part for any athlete to monitor and there is no one size fits all but there is knowledge and tools to make life easier. We will never hand out a meal plan that tells athletes what to eat, rather using resources including plate breakdowns and eating for performance, we teach them what their body requires and assist them in making the right choices. For younger athletes just developing an understanding of calorie targets and learning that not all calories are the same can be overwhelming, but the benefit is that they will be able to create their own meal plans based off their needs.

  • Two male rugby players wearing black and pink jerseys with a lion logo, sitting on grass during practice or warm-up.

    WELLBEING & RECOVERY

Recovery ties heavily into our bullet proofing. It is Pre-habilitation to prevent us from getting injured and our time to gain flexibility. It is also tied into Wellbeing in a physical sense however wellbeing is a huge part of sports performance. We use our wellbeing questionnaire (required to be filled out to unlock their app workouts)  to track sleep patterns and also hydration along with general mindfulness. Away from the “face to face” sessions the athletes will be given a list of recovery techniques including 15-20min flexibility sessions. Each recovery technique will be allocated a points total with a goal to reach a weekly target.

APE Rugby League

APE is based on the southern end of the Central Coast. It is my passion to develop young players into their best versions and I am happy to share the secret to success -

PERSISTANCE and HARD WORK

During my time in development programs, pathways and NRL academies I can attest that if you are not willing to work hard for your dreams then you can guarantee limited success. I am not here to take your money and just fill spots, I am looking for players who really want to elevate themselves on and off the field. I can’t do the work for you however I can provide tried and tested processes for success and I can offer the exact same coaching that is delivered to athletes that have reached the pinnacle of our sport.
